The Next Normal: Finding Healthy Balance

It would be a major understatement to say that this new normal of stay-at-home orders, social distancing and Zoom meetings has had an impact on many parts of our everyday lives. Everyone is adjusting to this change of pace while we get our footing to move forward. In fact, nine out of 10 adults have said that their lives have changed since the rise of COVID-19. So, if you’ve been feeling like you’re struggling to maintain a healthy balance between being hyperproductive and utterly stuck during this unprecedented time, you’re not alone. 

These wellness tips will point you in the right direction for finding balance while you adjust to the new normal. Just remember to be gentle and patient with yourself as you implement these useful strategies. 

Cultivate a Gratitude Practice

Right now, it’s so important to intentionally acknowledge and appreciate the good things in your life. 

More than ever, we are starting to see that it is the little things that make a big difference — whether that’s a nice cup of coffee to start the day or a chance to catch up with friends you haven’t seen in a while over the phone. At the end of each day, try writing down three things you were grateful for throughout the day. There are lots of perks to taking the time to be grateful for what’s working out in your life, from raising your spirits to boosting your immune system and helping you rest better at night. 

Keep It Moving 

Whether you are getting used to your remote school courses, juggling work/home-life balance as a busy mom or reconnecting with yourself later in life as you prioritize your health, it’s important to find sustainable ways to adapt your workout to keep your activity levels up. If you were used to sweating it out in the gym, consider trying out home workouts. If you weren’t active before but find yourself sitting more often, try getting out in your neighborhood for a nice walk. Studies have shown that there are major benefits to walking, including lowering your blood sugar and strengthening your heart.

Find Your Peace

Our previous go-to distractions, like getting lost in a good book, an amazing film or an enlightening conversation, may not be hitting the spot right now with so much going on. For that reason, it may be time to find your zen through meditation. There are great meditation and mindfulness apps that can help guide you if you’re a beginner. You can also try adding CBD oil to your regimen to help relieve anxiety.

Give Yourself a Break

It’s cool if you’re one of those people that’s been baking bread, learning a new hobby and brushing up on your French. It’s also okay if you’re simply trying to hold on every day as you redefine what a regular workday looks like and how you’ll spend your weekends trying to decompress. Whatever camp you fall into, allow space for yourself, and ride the wave. Some days will be better than others, but the most important thing to remember is grace. You’re doing your best. 

Mind Your Health

It’s crucial to take a well-rounded approach when it comes to being healthy. That means taking care of your physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health. Make sure you implement a heart-healthy diet and stay active, but also make sure you find ways to create joy in your life and develop a self-care routine that fits into your daily routine. It might also be time to create clear boundaries to maintain your health, like not accepting calls when you’re overwhelmed, saying no to another salty stress snack or putting down your phone when the news becomes too much.
