The Story of SHEbd: Empowerment, Education and Healing

Finding a brand that you trust with your health is great, but really connecting with a company that roots for your complete well-being is rare. It may sound like a minor distinction, but once you can feel the difference, it’s something you will never forget.

Before becoming the founder of SHEbd, Kara Harrison parlayed her health struggles into assets that brought her to a place in her life where she experienced that unmistakable difference that informed and inspired the way she now runs her women-focused company. However, her journey into the CBD industry is not a story of overnight success, nor did it come without great adversity. But like all true leaders and visionaries, this female entrepreneur was able to repurpose her pain into a resource that seeks to serve and elevate others.

Here is the story of SHEbd — we hope it inspires a connection with our brand in you. Because after all, SHE is nothing without you.

Where It All Began

When Kara Harrison tells her story, it almost sounds like an episode of a medical drama series. A horrific battle with long-term endometriosis led to a revolving door of surgeries, tragedies and devastating health setbacks that almost cost Harrison her life. Each attempt at resurrecting her wellness seemed to be a direct challenge to Murphy’s Law, and everything that could go wrong went wrong. After many of her surgeries, she would experience complications typically reserved for very rare circumstances. The complexity of her condition continued to get worse as she spent four months in a Northern California hospital as the only non-cancer patient on the oncology floor.

It was during this time that she encountered a group of nurses who she refers to as her “angels.” Though she was supported by a top-of-the-line physician, she credits these women with saving her life. From making sure that she did the basics like staying hydrated and moving daily, to their attentive kindness and consideration toward her, not only did they improve her health, they lifted her spirit.

Much of the nursing staff offering her support were formerly doctors in Asia who were no longer able to practice at that level after moving to the United States, and they became a great source of education for her.  These nurses were fountains of knowledge who shared their expertise, and Harrison began to understand why there were cancer patients in the hospital who smoked cannabis to help ease their symptoms.

Entering the CBD Industry

It still took a couple of years after getting back into her life and career before Harrison thought of creating SHEbd. While thinking of a business venture, Harrison was asked by a friend if she would ever consider entering the cannabis industry. Recalling her days on the oncology floor and the group of nurses that supported her back to health, Harrison wanted to not only offer a path to restored health but to also become an educational resource specifically for women. It was clear that there was a real need for straightforward, science-backed health education for women, and being an integral part of that within the industry was important to her. The access to high-quality CBD as part of a balanced wellness routine became her mission, and that’s how SHEbd was born.

CBD industry

Harrison wanted to make sure that SHEbd was an authentic brand that stood apart from others. That meant a hands-on approach to carefully developing formulas that promote balance and homeostasis.Whether it was relationships with thought leaders in endocannabinology, or scientific researchers at Stanford, SHEbd was founded with a continuous drive toward producing the most high-end and pure CBD-rich hemp oil possible. Without the inclusion of unnecessary dyes or additives of any kind, Harrison conceived a collection of products that was small and limited to only include exactly what the body needs to heal.

Commitment to Core Values

At its core, SHEbd is about helping women maintain homeostasis — and CBD plays a big role in that. However, if your body, soul and environment are not all in balance, it is impossible to achieve homeostasis. Therefore, if SHEbd truly wants to empower women to take control of their health, we have to think beyond our CBD products.

This is why the health of the planet is also something that’s very important to Harrison, and why sustainability and philanthropy have fit into the foundation of SHEbd from the very beginning. Having spent some time in Southeast Asia and India during earlier points of her career, Harrison was familiar with a level of environmental impact that many people in the states rarely experience. In beautiful places like Bali she found plastic washing up on the beaches in place of pure natural beauty. Instead of waiting to start pursuing a new company with sustainability at its core, she decided to jump in right away with SHEbd. She didn’t want to wait until the company reached certain benchmarks and goals before committing to being a leader in best practices and standards for all brands.
It’s the same when it comes to the company’s charitable engagements, especially their focus on community and what it means to be in an industry where there are still people being arrested for consuming cannabis. Harrison has wrestled with how hard it is to think about trying to commoditize a plant that so many people are sitting in prison for today. She’s asked herself how she can even begin to sleep at night unless she does her best to position her company to help in every way that it can. Because of that, SHEbd aligned with organizations like WAKE International and Running Start so that they can continue to be an agent for change in the industry.

The Future of CBD

SHEbd is constantly striving to elevate its core values by helping women achieve success, understanding and self-awareness through an integrative approach to health. Moving forward, Harrison plans to continue to build a community around the company’s mission to empower, educate and heal, with a focus on helping to connect the dots between physical, mental and emotional health.

She believes that the body will fight like crazy to heal itself if we will just get out of the way and allow it to do so, whether that means improving our nutrition or the quality of our sleep, increasing our water intake and daily activity or incorporating CBD as a staple in our wellness routine.
